CareCloud Helps Ease Holiday Stress for Urgent Care Centers

Doctors on Call Maui Turns to CareCloud to Help Manage Complexities of Caring for Visitors

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- With the holiday season upon us, many people will be traveling away from home but, while they may be on vacation, the need for medical attention doesn’t take days off. Urgent care centers report an average of three patient visits per hour, according to a recent study, and visits to urgent care clinics increased by 119 percent among commercially insured Americans between 2008 and 2015, according to research published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

CareCloud, the platform for high-growth medical groups, is helping urgent care centers manage the administrative complexities of treating one-time patients, including a seasonal influx of travellers. The company announced today that Doctors on Call Maui has become the latest urgent care center to select CareCloud as their technology partner to help patients get in and out faster with the treatment they need, while improving practice productivity and profitability.

Since establishing its first clinic six years ago, Doctors on Call Maui has grown to 27 staff members in two locations, serving 30,000 patients annually, with over 60 percent of its patient volume coming from one-time patients. Supported by CareCloud’s integrated cloud-based revenue cycle management, electronic health record and patient experience technology, Doctors on Call Maui has grown 122 percent and is planning to open a third location.

“People don’t expect to get sick on vacation, but it’s a reality,” said Paige Williams, managing director, Doctors on Call Maui. “With CareCloud’s technology, we’re able to make the whole process as fast and smooth as possible, keeping the patient moving quickly from the waiting room to the exam room to getting whatever labs or medicines they need, while avoiding the insurance eligibility and coverage issues that can create frustration and delays.”

Groups like Doctors on Call Maui are part of an $18 billion urgent care industry that is expected to grow 5.8% annually through 2018, according to a white paper by the Urgent Care Association. Several features of CareCloud’s technology platform are particularly helpful to urgent care centers in addressing the complexities of providing on-demand care to a predominantly transient patient population. These features include: providing real-time insurance eligibility verification, electronically sending orders and prescriptions to other providers, managing complicated insurance requirements, and billing for hundreds of plans.

“The urgent care business model is probably one of the most complex to manage given the variety of coverage and reimbursement requirements that come with caring for a transient patient population,” said Ken Comée, CareCloud CEO. “It’s particularly gratifying to see the power of cloud computing at work helping clients like Doctors on Call Maui who are using our technology to grow their practice and help more patients.”
